Austin Amusement – Halloween!

Well we are a month into Austin – that was fast!

We kept the fun rolling from the first few weeks, albeit at a slower pace, and decided to get our music in with some My Morning Jacket at the Austin Music Hall.

1-MMM Concert

The venue had a good vibe and when the band played “Wordless Chorus” the audience came alive – it was memorable for sure and we’d see them again just to relive that moment.

2-MMM Concert

The rest of the weekend was shaping up to be kind of a bust with Hurricane Patricia dumping buckets of rain on Texas.  But yeh, no, rain aint ruining our party!  It didn’t in the mountains of Colorado and it sure as shit won’t in Texas.

We hit up the Violet Crown Cinema – which was official – to watch “The Martian”.  The theater has huge comfortable seats and, even better, a stocked beer and wine bar where you can buy food and drinks to chill on while watching your flick.

3-Violet Crown

Life is good

And of course what would an Austin blog post be without a cameo from Wally.  It’s actually kind of funny how this guy finagled his way into three blog posts so far.  He’s the man though; he’s like 80 and is in better shape than most 30 year olds we know.

4-Walley

Wally also knows every inch of the Austin outdoors and took us to Zilker Dog Park with the pups and then Red Bud Isle Off Leash Area; a little peninsula jutting out into Lady Bird Lake (the CO River) where we randomly ended up at while canoeing two weeks prior.

5-Walley

The cherry on the cake: since Chica and Lilac love each other; Wally is our permanent dog sitter when needed.

6-Walley

Surprises, we love surprises! Alex sent Amy some Philly memorabilia.  Thanks Alex!  We miss all you people back home like crazy!

7-Philly Gear

Halloween in Austin.

Only one word needed to describe it accurately: INSANE!

12-Halloween

We started the night watching Philly’s own TU Owls fight the good fight against Notre Dame at Lavaca Street Bar – in full costume.

10-Halloween

Some might argue I didn’t even dress up considering my role as Amy’s slave was cemented when we said our vows.

11-Halloween

Since we had a hunch it would be wild on Dirty 6 we bought tickets for a show featuring DJ Thibault.  As you can see from the first Halloween picture above, we were absolutely right.  Place was a madhouse… damn,  we must be getting old.

The music at the DJ show was awesome, but not enough people and energy showed up, hence the foray out to 6th Street.  Funny thing is that once we saw the madness we scurried back to our mellow (relative) show – yup, we’re old.

9-Halloween

After the fun we headed home and Chica seemed a bit confused.

8-Halloween

Winding down the weekend we got some nice weather and decided to explore Austin.

The State Capitol

Austin Amusement – Amy’s Birthday Weekend!

With the ACL music festival happening our first two weekends, we avoided the madness of Zilker Park.  Now that it was over we were free to venture out to that beautiful part of the city and fortunately, we had a tour guide!

Wally, who stayed with us in Palisade along with his Doberman, Lilac knows every inch of Austin and its beautiful outdoors activities; the man actually cleared his own trails in the area for more peaceful hiking.  Who better to go with…our first hike in Austin was fantastic!

1- Walley Hike

2 - Walley Hike

On the way out to meet Wally we noticed that we passed Chuy’s – legendary Tex-Mex.  So on the way home it was a foregone conclusion that we’d have to stop there to replenish some calories after the hike.

3 - Chuy's

4 - Chuy's

5 - Chuy's

Place is classic.

The hike was a nice warm up for the busy and active weekend we had teed up for Amy’s birthday.

On Saturday we rented a canoe from Rowing Dock and enjoyed a nice few hours on the Colorado River or what locals call Lady Bird or Town Lake.

6 - Lake

It was awesome to be outdoors and seeing so many other people enjoying such a beautiful day.

7 - Lake

There were some pretty official houses on the edge of the cliff overlooking the river; what do these people do to afford that??

8 - Lake

After about three hours on the canoe we both worked up quite an appetite and headed to Chi’lantro to get their famed Kimchi fries along with some pretty awesome tasting tacos and wings.

9 - Chi'Lantro

Chi’lantro we will be back!

On the eve of Amy’s birthday we were home playing backgammon and gearing up to get to bed early so we would feel good for our planned hike the next day.  Waking up the next morning and getting ready for this hike felt great.  We both thanked our past selves for making the right call and not getting banged up the night before Amy’s big day.  Hello 32…

While there are not nearly as many options as Colorado for some solid hiking, Austin has an impressive amount of choices for a big city.  We chose a relatively challenging hike – RiverPlace Nature Trail – which was about 6 miles of constant incline and decline.

10 - Hike

11 - Hike

We were both grateful to have gotten back out into the nature.

After a few hours resting up we got ready for our dinner reservations at Uchiko.

12 - Bday

Girl is looking good at 32!

We heard great things about Uchiko; it is a spinoff of Uchi where we ate a few years ago so we knew it would be good.  The restaurant being completely packed on a Sunday night confirmed our optimism before we had a single bite.

13 - Bday

Be ready to drop some doe if you hit this place up.  That said, you get what you pay for; the food was delicious!

We had one more obligation to fulfill in this jam packed few days and that was Monday Night Football – Eagles v Giants baby.  Since we don’t have cable at our rental, there was no option except heading back to Mr. Tramps.

If you didn’t read the last post, this place is an awesome Philadelphia Eagles bar.  So awesome in fact, it gives you an option to order a cheesesteak in two different ways: Geno’s or Pat’s.  Only problem is they don’t know how to spell Geno’s!

14 - Mr Tramps

Amazing week, incredible town and killer eats.  Oh yeh, the Eagles won!

Austin – We have arrived!

Well  we’ve arrived in Austin and just like that we’ve started the next chapter of our amazing adventure.  Fittingly, it started with a bang!

Jordan was arriving to Austin late Thursday evening  (day after we arrived) so while waiting to pick him up we headed to the Flamingo Cantina to watch our old buddy Micah play some music.

1-Micah Playing

The next day Sean (who was randomly in Austin for a conference) arrived and when Sean’s in town it’s ALWAYS interesting.

We all had a hankerin’ for some legit Austin BBQ and Lamberts came highly recommended.  Needless to say we munched out hard!

2-Lamberts

3-Lamberts

5-Lamberts

After leaving Lamberts with very full bellies we strolled to 6th Street (Dirty 6 as the locals call it) to find some live music and ended up enjoying some Texas Country (I think I just made up that genre) at the Dizzy Rooster.

7-Dizzy

6-Dizzy

Sean wasn’t the only random to be in Austin on our first weekend. Frank and Joe happened to be in town so we left Dirty 6 and hit Rainey Street to meet those two hooligans at Bangers.  This place is a huge German style pub with an awesome outdoor section and fantastic beer.  At some point we NEED to hit it up for brunch too -the food looked awesome!

8-Bangers

We rolled around to a few bars on Rainey and then headed back to Dirty 6 to meet Jeska and Jordan.  The night gets hazy from here and pictures are scarce, but I know we had a great time.

The next morning we nursed ourselves back to health with some of the best Cuban food I’ve ever eaten from the Cuban Sandwich Café – and yes, I’ve eaten Cuban in Miami!  This place is a hole in the wall that leads to heaven.

Jordan and Jeska, before heading to ACL, took us to “Jack’s Tower”, basically this guy’s house that has a sick view of Austin.

10-Tower

9-Tower

We hung out there and then got dropped off at South Congress where we enjoyed live music and bomb ass taco’s from Guero’s Taco Bar.

12-Gueros

That night we hit tons of places, met up with Jordan, Jeska, Frank, Joe and ended the night at 5am.

Few! That was a wild weekend.

With some alone time, Amy and I decided to explore the Mueller District where we’d be posted up for the next 4 months.  What better place to start than Torchey’s Taco’s which is a good place to grab a drink and grub within walking distance of our house.

11-Torchey's

On our second weekend we hung out with Micah and his girl Jessa back at the Flamingo Cantina and watched Micah jam out with another Reggae band.

13-Flamingo

And while there were so many fun memories packed into the first two weekends a shining highlight was Mister Tramps.  Amy decided to catch up on some sleep and I rolled out to this self proclaimed Eagles bar in Austin and it did not disappoint.

There was an entire back room with three huge projector screens that was filled with wild Philadelphia fans and we watched the Eagles destroy the Saints.  This was great for everyone except for the lone (and brave) Saints fan that watched the game with us.  He was appropriately shamed.

14-Mr Tramps

Austin – YOU ARE COOL!

Santa Fe, NM

Packing up our gear on Sunday morning and saying goodbye to the amazing people we met on the Western Slope was really sad.  It started to kick in that this was “it”.  “It” not being the last time in Palisade and definitely not the end of the friendships we made, but “it” being the end of one of the most incredible, amazing, fantastic (you get the point) chapters in our lives.

BUT on to the next one!

To break up the ride to Austin we decided to stop half way through, and oh look, Santa Fe happens to be right about half way.  Driving from UT to NM was especially awesome with the Lunar Eclipse unfolding in the mountains north of Santa Fe.

nm-1

No we’re not staying at Motel 6!  We booked a sweet little Casita a few miles outside of Santa Fe, NM.

nm-2

This place was awesome and Chica was able to expand her horizons.

nm-4

As for Santa Fe, we are so glad we made the stop.  Great food, beautiful town and culture with the abundance of art.

The first night we took a quick walk around the Plaza area and saw some beautiful, old (1600’s) buildings while waiting for our 8:30 reservations at Cafe Pasquals, but never actually got there!

nm-9

(Cathedral Basilica of St Francis)

We should have known that starting on cocktails at the Secreto Lounge (worth it!) hours before our reservation  would likely alter our dinner plans – and this isn’t hindsight being 20/20, just common sense.

nm-10

Still thinking we were going to make it to Pasqual’s we stopped at the Coyote Cafe Rooftop Cantina for a drink and some chips & salsa to hold us over – and then came a waiter, Justin.  This guy was born for sales and quite frankly we were hungry.  He ensured we were served well, and out of nowhere appeared lightly fried cheese and bacon stuffed  Jalapeno shooters.  Umm, not hungry anymore!

IMG_5043

On our second day the cell service was not great at the Casita, so we cut out of work early to explore Santa Fe.  What the hell, right?  We only live once.

We started our excursion by grabbing lunch at The Shed and we knew it would be a good day.  If it’s not obvious, this place is MONEY!

With full bellies we took a walk to Canyon Road to explore the art galleries Santa Fe has to offer.

nm-5

nm-6

We learned that Alexei Butirskiy is the freaking man and that we need to make WAY more money to afford ill art.

The combination of the early wake up call from the roosters and the heavy Spanish food made us sleepy and we rolled into Cafe Greco for some coffee, and to our delight, live music.

nm-11

We still had time to kill and appetites to gain before our dinner reservation at 7 – we were not missing this one! – so why not stop for a beer at the Draft Station overlooking the Plaza?

nm-12

nm-8

Beers were excellent.

And for the finale – tapas at El Meson.

nm-13

Go there!

Thanks for a great time Santa Fe!

Lake Powell, Utah

Packing up to leave Palisade just didn’t feel right and would have been super depressing if it wasn’t for our awesome friends inviting us to Lake Powell for our last weekend out west.  Knowing we were heading for a kickass time softened the blow – at least temporarily.

Leaving - Vehicle

Even the moon came up to bid us farewell.

Leaving - Mountain

Ok, this was like a kick in the nuts.

Leaving CO

The drive from Palisade to Powell was about 4 hours and every second was spectacular – Utah, you are beautiful!

Bullfrog Marina is where we posted up.

p-1

p-3
p-5

This trip actually worked out well since it shortened the drive to Santa Fe, where we would be staying to break up the ride to Austin, by a few hours.  Even if it didn’t though we would have went.  It was our good friend Ashley’s birthday and an impromptu goodbye party for us and another friend of theirs that was moving as well.  Not that this crew needed a reason to party.

p-10

p-2

Yes, the hula-hoops were put to use after a few drinks by the fire at night.

p-4

Normally we would have left Chica at the dogvacay spot, but had to bring her along since we were driving right from UT to NM.  Bringing her on the boat was a no go, so  Chica and I took a driving excursion along Burr Trail that brought us all the way through Capitol Reef National Park out to Escalante National Reserve

m-4

m-5

In hindsight I bit off more than I could chew having driven over 120 miles round trip with 40 being some pretty hard core 4 wheeling.  And yes, I got lost and had a freak-out moment.  But I’m alive, got to see some real dope scenery and definitely have improved my off-road driving skills.

m-6

m-2

As you can see, the views made getting lost in the desert a little more bearable.

While I was out tearing up the desert, Amy was touring and surfing Lake Powell.

p-7

p-6

p-8

Fortunately, Amber and Jeremy wanted another round of surfing before sunset and I got to head out on the water with them later in the day.  Many many thanks to you guys!

Now I know the Palisade/Junction crew aren’t all the biggest social media fans, but if y’all ever come across this, know that we will FOREVER appreciate the wide-open-arms welcome we received from you and all the good times.

Palisade Pastimes – Final Weekend in CO

So, this is our last weekend in Colorado, and while we are super bummed out, it couldn’t have been a better weekend to go out on.

We kicked it into gear on Friday afternoon with Desa inviting us for a guided tour up Stage Coach Trail.  This is the last local trail that we had yet to conquer and I’m glad we went with someone who knew what they were doing; there were a ton of wash-outs that made navigating the trail difficult.

On our way up – the beginning was definitely the most strenuous.

1

It does level out pretty quickly after the hard part and opens up to awesome 360 degree views.

2

3

Amazing perspective of Palisade giving the opposite view of the Rim Trail which we’ve done a few times.

4

5

6

7

The flag pole at the top is the typical objective when climbing up, but you can really just walk around the top of the mountain – there is no real end to the trail.

Enjoying the view

IMG_4408

For those that have visited, it’s known that sunset – at least in our opinion – is the most beautiful time of day with the desert mountains glistening burnt orange.

Well the way down was all sunset baby and it was amazing.

10

Chica and “the weens” had a blast!

11

All in all the hike was about 5 miles elevating over 1,300 ft – amazing!

With Colorado Winefest taking over town (explain in a minute) and this being our last weekend in Palisade you know we’re keeping the night going.

We dropped Chica off at the house and headed right back out to the Brewery to hang out and watch Stray Grass jam out.  This band rocked it and we had a blast, so much so that we took a bunch of crappy videos and not many pictures; however we salvaged a good one of Amy and Jenny.

12

Once the band wrapped it up, we called it a night and went back for some stargazing before recharging for Winefest.

So, yes, back to Winefest; officially Colorado Mountain Winefest.   This is a gathering of Colorado’s finest wineries and of course it’s located in Palisade – this place is freaking awesome!

13

And wait, to add to the awesomeness, Stray Grass (the band we enjoyed so much at the Brewery) was the main performance at the festival.

After countless tastings – which are included and unlimited with a ticket purchase – we bought a nice bottle of wine and enjoyed the music.

14

Did I mention there wasn’t a cloud in the sky – perfect day!

15

During our hike Desa was very surprised we hadn’t tried Sprigs and Sprouts and the following day we randomly stumbled upon their booth (out of hundreds), had a taste of yummy oils and decided that on Sunday we would go to the shop for a more personalized tasting and buying experience.

Sprigs and Sprouts – done.

16

Just like a wine tasting, there is a menu and an olive oil/balsamic connoisseur to guide you through your tasting.  We wanted EVERYTHING!

17

After coming back from Junction Mark plopped on the couch and watched football while Amy went to purchase and enjoy one of our favorite local wineries: Colterris

20

IMG_4912

IMG_4907

After a miserable Eagles game we decided to walk it off and took an extended neighborhood walk.

Sunday Walk

How are we leaving this place!?!?

Camping, Hiking, Canoeing w/ Josh, Gabe & Alex

As we wind down our stay in Colorado the goal is to go out with a bang and we certainly did this past week.

Homeboy Josh came through on Tuesday night staying to Saturday and Gabe & Alex came through Thursday night sticking around until Monday.  Naturally we got as much in as possible.  Only ill shit (inside joke).

Here’s the kicker, Amy had no idea Gabe and Alex were coming so there was elaborate scheming taking place in preparation.

Once the word was out Amy and Alex spent Thursday and Friday in Palisade.

IMG_4739

IMG_4735

IMG_4745

The men rode out to Utah to camp in the Goblin Valley area Thursday night.  We drove out to Behind the Reef Road (off Temple Mountain Rd. past Goblin Valley Rd.) where there were multiple dispersed camping spots in the middle of nowhere; we were completely secluded!

IMG_1440

IMG_4501

IMG_4502

On Friday the men rolled out to see Goblin Valley and then hit Arches National Park for a few hours on the way back to Palisade.

IMG_1457

IMG_4483

Ohhh but they day wasn’t over yet.  The crew (Amy, Alex, Mark, Josh, Gabe) rallied back in Palisade and geared up for a night on the town with “the trifecta” being the ultimate goal.  The trifecta is when you start a night out at the Brewery, move on to the Peach Street Distillers (the Still) and end at the Livery where the locals are surprisingly good at Karaoke.

No pictures from that night, but we want everyone to know that Josh got up there and did his thing on the mic.

Awesome night!

Saturday morning came quickly and we all loaded up to ride Josh out to the airport.  After dropping him off the remaining crew headed into Junction and ate a solid brunch at Bin 707.

With bellies full we cruised back to Palisade to get ready for an afternoon in Grand Mesa canoeing around Island Lake.

IMG_4509

A nice relaxing day is what we all needed before Sundays hike.

Yes, this is all in less than a week’s time!  AND there is NO way Gabe and Alex come to Colorado and not see peaks!

We decided to hike to Geneva Lake.

IMG_4792

This is a 4.2 mile round trip hike that elevates 1,300 ft taking us to about 11,000 ft.  The trail was relatively secluded because of the super-intense 7 mile off-road trail that leads to the trailhead.  Now that we’re all done with that ride, it’s safe to say I nearly shat my pants.

Well the ride was worth it – have a look:

But wait!  We’re not done with the awesomeness.  Riding to the trailhead we passed through this tiny, in-the-middle-of-nowhere town called Marble where we saw a LEGIT BBQ spot.  Dinner debate was instantly over; after hiking we would dine at Slow Groovin BBQ.

We finished the trip with a night of booze and cards and I’m not sure it could have gone any better.

Thanks for coming out gang!

LABOR DAY UTAH TRIP (3 OF 3)

On our last day of an action packed weekend we left Bryce and the Hoodoo’s and drove up to Goblin Valley via Rt. 12 a gorgeous scenic byway that cuts up north and intersects with Rt. 24 taking us through Capitol Reef National Park.

Capitol Reef

Wish we had more time to actually explore this place…guess we’ll just have to go back.

Final Stop: Goblin Valley State Park

IMG_4668

We didn’t have a lot of time in Goblin, but in reality you don’t need it.  This DOES NOT mean that Goblin isn’t a worthy destination – it’s a must see!

LABOR DAY UTAH TRIP (2 OF 3)

Waking up a second morning at our beautiful campsite in Zion was heaven; we didn’t want to leave, but we knew there was more to see.

Second Stop: Bryce Canyon National Park

Driving from Zion to Bryce was a constant thrill, tons of beautiful and really diverse scenery.

The plan was to just drive through, check out the canyon and head on to Goblin Valley from there.  Once we arrived at Bryce it was already noon and there were surprisingly vacancy signs for the park campgrounds.  Not wanting to rush our exploration of the park we decided to spend the night and take on our second big hike in two days.

DSC03839

Fairyland Canyon Trail is listed as an 8 mile hike.  Instead of starting at the trailhead, the shuttle driver drove us up the paved road cutting 1.5 miles off which we were grateful for after having hiked a total of 11 miles at Zion.

Getting to the trailhead this is what we saw

DSC03841

This definitely does not suck.  All those formations by the way are called Hoodoos.

The trail takes you down into the canyon for a nice tour.

It was a tough hike because of the length and the fact that you need to climb about 2 miles back out of the canyon at a steep grade, but as you can see…totally worth it.

After the hike we were shot.  For a minute we contemplated doing another small hike after, but na.  We went back to camp and set up shop.

IMG_4449

Typical organized campground with no privacy, but we were happy that we decided to post up in Bryce for the night; that hike was worth altering our plans.

After setting up shop we relaxed a bit, got some roadies together and walked out to Sunset Point which was only a 5 minute trek from the campground.

IMG_4645

IMG_4452

Yup, that was worth it.

Once the sun dropped low enough where the canyon was shaded we walked back to camp, got a fire going and grubbed up before laying down for an early night.

Labor Day Utah Trip (1 of 3)

Three National Parks (Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef)
Goblin Valley State Park
900 total driving miles
19 hiking miles

Part of the reason we decided to park it in Palisade (and the Western Slope in general) was its proximity to Utah.

Utah? Yes, Utah! Ever since we had a quick visit to Zion National Park a few years ago we vowed to get back there.

So, with a three day weekend and temperatures finally dropping below 100 we were off.

Fist Stop: Zion National Park

After reading ahead of time that the campgrounds in the park fill up quick we decided to plan on camping in BLM (Bureau of Land Management).  BLM is public land open to all and finding campsites is as easy as finding a back road with fire rings.

DSC03753

DSC03758

As you can see, we found a gem of a campsite!  This place is located off of Smithsonian Butte National Backcountry Byway – GPS: 37.1514, -113.059 (since it’s not easy to find).  If you camp on this road stay patient and keep driving uphill until you see switchbacks that will lead to multiple existing campsites.

Going to Zion the next day we debated on hiking Angels Landing or Observation Point.  Guidance from the park ranger led us to choose the 8 mile, 2,100 ft climb up Observation Point.

DSC03767

Getting started we took a short detour to check out Weeping Rock:
